I am currently debating this exact issue. Is an author blog worth it - especially in 2024 when social media is the primary mechanism of connection.
I am absolutely unsure if blogging is worthwhile for me, yet here I am.
PROS OF A BLOG
A record of my writing journey. I wish I had kept a diary from the beginning of my serious creative pursuits (not limited to writing). I've done so many different things over the years, and it would make quite a chronicle (with much more to come!)
New audiences might discover me - depending on all that SEO stuff (which I currently have no mental space for)
My community can stay updated on my work
Friends and family can read it instead of listening to me go on. Actually, who am I kidding? They'll probably never read it (and that's okay - an important early lesson for authors is understanding that you can't depend on friends and family to read your work; however, that doesn't mean they don't love and support you!)
It's a mental release and an exercise of self-examination and clarification. Writing always helps me understand myself better.
CONS OF A BLOG
It's time consuming
No one aside from myself, may read it (let's see)
It's another commitment to add to the ever-growing list
It may be embarrassing (however, that's never been a problem for me before)
This is basically where I'm at with this idea at the moment. The pros are greater in number, but I can only see that now that I have 'blogged'. Ha, ha! Proving my own point about active self-reflection being valuable and all of that.
I'm going to leave this one here - I've got to finish formatting my book 6: Big Money. It's a great story about such an awesome kid (Ryan). A magic spell allows him to turn leaves into money. Wouldn't that be cool? I can only wish! The back story behind this easy-to-read teen book, is another blog post altogether!
If you came and you read this - prove me wrong that no one may read my blog. Write a comment - and thank you!
